Hoorn Harbour city
The harbour of Hoorn was sung about by Dutch folk singer Vader Abraham in his song “Het kleine café aan de haven” (the small cafe on the harbour). The original text of this famous text (world famous in the Netherlands) can be viewed, framed and all, in café Het Schippershuis!
The harbour area of Hoorn covers a whopping four harbours with a total of 1100 berths. Aside from the municipal Binnen- and Buiten harbours there’s the Grashaven and the Vluchthaven which are operated privately. The Binnenhaven is the most modern, but also the most nostalgic out of the four. This is the place from where the DEIC ships used to depart back in the day. You will find a number of stately 17th century cheese warehouses and merchants’ warehouses built around this harbour. Many of the early residents immortalised their presence with their family sigils or adages.
Anyone walking along the small dyke from the Buitenhaven via Achter op ’t Zand, will pass the Grashaven which is being operated by the Stichting Jachthaven Hoorn. This has capacity for up to 100 ships, and the Vluchthaven that is located a little farther behind the Grashaven has room for another 40 boats looking for a place to overnight. The harbour has all the required facilities.
