Zwaag
Zwaag is a village in the municipality of Hoorn, it was founded around the 13th century AD. Since 1 January 1979 it is part of the municipality of Hoorn.
Churches
The village has a church, whose tower dates from around 1500. This church is from 29 December 2005 part of the Protestant Church in Hoorn-Zwaag. On this day the association of the Reformed Church in Zwaag-Risdam, the Reformed Church Hoorn and the Reformed Church Hoorn have continued together. The church is also a wedding location of the municipality of Hoorn. There is also the Lourdes chapel and the village has a Roman Catholic church, Sint Martinus.
The village has even had city rights for some time. But due to constant disagreement with Hoorn, Zwaag has had to give up these rights. After that Zwaag has always remained a village.
Originally, Zwaag was a ribbon village with a few side paths such as the Balkweit, the Laantje (now Krijterslaan) and the Unjerpad. Gradually the village has been extended in such a way that the old structure has actually completely disappeared, except that it can still be recognized in older places in older buildings; the Dorpsstraat shows here and there the characteristic ribbon development with bridges over the ditch to the farms and houses.
Special events
Every year in Zwaag carnival is celebrated. During the carnival, a procession takes place in Zwaag where the parade participants in a long procession take a fixed route through the village with floats that sometimes have all kinds of political meanings. This event, which attracts more than 50,000 visitors each time, is organized by Carnavalsvereniging the Mask. In 2016, the association received a royal honorary medal from the mayor of Hoorn, Yvonne van Mastrigt. The Mask received this royal intercession during the 50th anniversary of this association.
